Worms for redfish?

Featured Replies

I mainly fish for redfish and do not fish for bass.  I'm learning everyday and most things you guys do transfers over to redfishing.  What brand and style worm would you all throw on a grass flat for bass.  I will be rigging this carolina style.  Thanks.

boatcaptain, i catch a fair amount of redfish and i agree with you, alot of the techniques for bass work great for reds. in fact, most of the redfish i have caught were when i was bass fishing.

as far as your question goes, i have caught some good reds on carolina rigs with zoom trick worms, ol monsters, and craw style baits. i tend to find creeks or rivers with creeks emptying into them and fish the mouths on the outgoing tide. good stuff.

the red in my avatar was actually the third one i caught off a laydown in the bend of a marsh creek.

white/yellow belly bandit crankbait.

waking a spinnerbait over grass points works well too.

Thanks for the help Kikstand.  Yeah, believe me a red pulls like a freight train.  Just tryin to learn some new techniques.  This is a great forum, I visit it daily, and I don't fish for bass that often.

We have had redfish threads in this section before, that's why it's called other species.  Redfish in my part of Florida are not easy to catch simply because not many around, need to head north.  Redfish and snook for that matter are quite similar to bass fishing, same equipment and tackle can be used.  I don't fish tournaments so I'm always trying to catch the biggest I can. Ever try a snook ball?  A snook ball is nothing more than a 1/4 oz jg with a long white worm trailer, it's very effective for redfish too.

IMO LMbass are the easiest fish to catch, abundant, aggressive, easy to handle, can catch as many with a $20 combo using a plastic worm as you can with a stella & loomis using hundreds of dollars of tackle.  Any time you read a post where someone has caught 20 -50 in an outing , how hard can it be?

With all due respect, a 3-5 pound Red Drum puts up more fight than any double digit sized Bass.

I'd like to see a 5# red pulled in with a ul, maybe if you ran it down with a boat , but I'd bet against doing it from shore.  You would either be spooled or have your 6# yozuri broken like sewing thread.

Man I wish 25+ reds were abundant on my side of the gulf coast. Way too much fishing pressure, thy're as wary as up north carp and just as smart. Ive never caught a red on a worm but a buddy has in the front of the boat. He rigged it with a light jig head and hopped it along the bottom. I have caught reds on slug-go's.   The water I fish has just as much snook as it has bass and I find bass tactics work equally well on saltwater fish that have become landlocked in freshwater.

being from jacksonville. we have some of the largest reds in the country, there are also alot. but they are not easy to catch at all! I mostly fish them along rock drops, but sometimes in the grass. When im along the rocks, I use super flukes and sencos. in the grass I use top water frogs both buzz frogs and soft bodied frogs. I will also use flukes and sencos. when im fishing deep water such as rock piles or drops I will use a black and blue jig and a fluke with a jig head. when I use a fluke i use pearl and arkansas shiner. with sencos I use watermelon, pearl, or any natural color. with frogs color make no real difference.
