Help with a good Hornpouting spot in NH?

Featured Replies

hello, i happened to find this site when googleing a good spot to hornpout and saw the forum board. i was hoping someone could direct me to a good spot, i live in the concord NH area and as a child used to have a blast poutin' but my favorite spot in concord was hoyt rd marsh and i havent even caught a fish in it in probably 10-15 yrs i tried going to the very middle in my canoe and dropping my line baited with a night crawler straight down as my grandfather had done but nothing but snags, in the very middle it is only 6 ft or so deep as i could touch it with the oar. milfoil has taken this pond like many others over bad.

i also wondered if anybody may have thought that the hornpout population is on the decline, or if its just me?

and does anybody from NH know if NH fish and game stocks them?

when i was a child it wasnt rare to go and catch a pail full of hornedpout in a night now it seems impossible, im not saying i want to catch a pail full or anything but around here your lucky if you catch one and thats not an exaggeration, id like a decent spot where i could catch 5 or 6 then be able to have a nice meal the next day.

Thanks everyone

Dan

NH Fish and Game doesn't stock them. I know of several different spots in my area (Dover area) that are great for hornedpouting. The Islinglass and Salmon Falls rivers both provide excellent numbers. I use light equipment so you can feel when they "tap" it, and then a light hook set. There is atleast 6 ponds within 10 minutes from me that are great for hornedpouting. How do they taste anyway? They are quite ugly, but I've heard they taste good.

IMO they taste quite well, no comparison to trout in terms of taste but they are like a white kind of fish. i batter mine then take a cast iron skillet with oil and fry them in it on the grill(ID do it on the stove top but mom isnt much for cooking wild things in the house). could you maybe tell me of some spots?

i havent really done it since i was maybe 10, im 19 now and would like to start getting into as turkey hutning is done and im bored til deer season
