Funny story. Thought I had my first trout EVER!

Featured Replies

So I pull one out of Wolf Creek this morning, which is a stocked trout area, but I don't fish WHERE they stock it, and instantly I think: "that's not a smallie! Must be my first trout!" So I ran for the camera, snapped a quick pic, and went to pull him off and let him go.

*squeezes the body, getting ready to remove hook*

"BURRRRRRRRRRRP!"

"WHOA! WHOOOOAAAAA! WHAT WAS THAT?"

Then the knot came loose and he fell back in... Thankfully, cuz I was shocked, the body was so soft I don't know how I'd have got him off... The FISH spooked the FISHERMAN. haha. So I was just like: "Wow, trout are really weird..."

So, I continued fishing, caught a few more smallies here and there, and went home thinking I'd finally caught a trout. (Although I don't really TRY, I know lotsa guys pull 'em out without going for em.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is a suckerfish. LOL. So I suppose I don't have a trout yet, but probably equally cool.

Get rid of the evidence (pic) and continue with the trout theory.  ;D

Haha. poor guy, if he's a suckerfish, I'm not sure that swimming around with a hook and half a lizard hanging out is survivable... You think?

sucker or "fallfish" for sure

Oh man, that's gotta be it... Never seen one before!

No, not a sucker, we call them creek chubs around here in SO-KY.

I've had fallfish hit topwater walk-the-dog baits, flukes, etc...

Guess they're not as uncommon as I thought... Definitely MY first though.

Chub and fallfish are actually two very slightly different species of fish (both Cyprinidae family).  Fallfish grow a lot bigger but that small one you have there could be either species.  Fun to catch!

Creek chubs are tiny (at least in PA   ;D)
