Round head jigs with curly tail grubs.

Went sauger fishing last weekend and the way we were fishing (slack water 15-22 ft ) made me think why not try a drop shot rig with a sauger jig for the weight instead of a drop shot weight and hook a zoom fluke or LFT Magic Shad or live minnow on the hook.  Any one ever heard of this or think of a reason why this would not work.........I don't think I'd try it in a lot of current but in slack water I think it may be worth a shot.

One of the best ways we catch eyes and sauger in tailwaters around here is just a jig and minnow, or Gulp Alive minnow Grub.  1/4-3/8 oz ball head with or without keeper, depending on water depth and current.  Every so often, we'll go up to 5/8 oz on jigheads in order to get down in the current.

I fish the Illinois River between Spring Valley and Starved Rock which is considered "sauger capitol of the world," so its pretyy easy to catch saugers. I have tried fishing for them with jigs an minnows, grubs, leeches, etc. I usually just fish the river for smallies and largemouth. My #1 bait is a Bomber fat free fingerling in there sexy shad color. Some days ill catch 10 sauger to every 1 bass i catch. So i catch a lot more by not even trying. Just hard to keep the gar off my bait.
