when would you use an offset round bend hook?

Featured Replies

I've been thinking that an offset shank round bend might be better than an EWG when fishing something on the bottom, like a Paca craw or a Speed Craw, and also might be better with worms.

All I've ever really used is EWG with pretty much everything, so when do you guys that use both apply the round bend?

I use offset round bends on C-rigs and split-shot rigs...they work well.  I use the Falcon hook and weight box, and just keep hooks in it.  That allows me to carry 1/0-5/0 in EWG's, Offset round bends, wide gap straight shanks, and Texposer's.

I use Owner 5102 hooks for everything but the fat ika.  They are Offset Shank, Wide Gap hooks with a 90° shoulder, XX strong shank.  (read that as a heavy wire, but not as heavy as gammy superline hooks)

They make the same hook in a standard (light) wire. (the 5101)

There is another thread running on EWG hooks where there is a perfect explanation of why EWG isn't always the hook of choice.  Credit The Natural, I believe.  The hook point is in-line with the eye on an EWG and that's what I don't like about them.  The owners have (in my opinion) the best hook point line differential- the opposite of the EWG comment from above.
