Advice needed on fishing jigs

Featured Replies

I want to start jig fishing for bass, but need advice. I assume I need a medium/heavy action rod? What about line test? I use spinning rods/reels. I tried yesterday with a medium spinning rod, and it didn't seem stiff enough. Do you work the jig similiar to a worm? Thanks for any advice.

I would suggest a 7' MH spinning rod if you intend to stay with spinning tackle.  For line, I would use a braid such as 40 lb. Power Pro which will give you plenty of strength and a small diameter for your spinning reel.  This should be a good setup for jigs as well as plastics.

As for working the jig, you can work it anyway you ant.  Swim it, crawl it, hop it, etc.  Whatever your situation dictates.

Lot of strikes on jigs come on the fall, so be sure to watch your line.

Good luck!

40lb test ;)

Whoa, that's insane strength.  I stick to 8lb test on my spinning gear.  But yeah, like he said, just drag it, bump it, jerk it, swim it until you get a bite.  Pay attention to how you are working the jig on each retrieve.  How long you are pausing, how far you are jerking it, etc...  Because when you get that bite, you want to keep fishing it the same way you did on that retrieve because now you know it works...

Also putting a crawdad, or other flapping soft plastic on the hook as a trailer doesnt hurt...

Insane?  :-?  Nope, not at all.   I'm looking at strength AND diameter.  With a superline, I get the same diameter as 8 lb. mono, but much more strength for hooksets and moving fish from cover.  I can toss a jig into open water and into very heavy cover on a spinning rod and know I will get a good hookset and get the fish out with a superline.  I will also get better feel.

I know a lot of people that are now putting superlines on spinning gear and doing a lot more with finesse baits and other baits than they ever could with mono of the same diameter.

Yeah, me too, I use braid whenever I want to fish a jig with a spinning rod. Sometimes I'll use a heavy fluorocarbon leader in real clear water situations.
