Pro's and fishing nets

Featured Replies

I can't figure out with so much money on the line and every fish and ounce worth so much why pro's don't land fish with nets?

Anyone know why?

It's against the rules.

Its against the rules in B.A.S.S. competition, nets are legal in FLW. I think it should be the anglers choice no matter which tour he fishes.

I disagree, I think not being able to use a net makes things more interesting.    Its hard for some one of large stature to kneel down and lip a bass.

Nets don't give a bass a very sporting chance.    Mano Y Mano.

Its also my opinion, thats why you see more older pros on the FLW, the use of the net.

Bass allowed nets to be used just prior to Ike coming on the scene, then no net rule and BASS pros jumped.     Who knows, its just an observation of when alot started fishing on the FLW side only.

I figured this had to be a silly question, oh well learn somethign new every day I guess. The no net makes for better tv for ESPN other than that it makes no sense.

No, it allows one to "swing land" them, bounce them off both consoles and step on them to keep them from flopping off the deck.

Much better for tournament fishermans' image, and great T.V. (<--This is sarcasm, for those unfamiliar.) ::)

I too disagree with the "no net" rule, however the rubberized nets are better at protecting the slime coat on the fish than the standard mesh variety.  I'm sick and tired of seeing those fish beat around from one end of the boat to the other.  As for allowing nets in FLW, I watched the final round from Beaver Lake yesterday and saw as many fish banged around in the boat as I do in BASS tx's.  Just don't like that at all  >:(

If you use a net and then set the net on the boat, what is to keep the fish from kicking and jumping then?  I notice that a lot when watching the FLW shows.  The non-boater does the net job and then often sets the fish on the boat so he can get back to fishing.  I also see it a lot on there when the only the pro is fishing.  He nets the fish then sets it down on the boat.

I like the no net rule.  It makes it a little more sporty, and adds action as the pro trys to land the fish.  However, I wish they would be a littke more careful and not let the fish slam against the deck.

Grow a pair of what?  If anything, the use of a net enhances the likelihood of a fish living.

How many times have you seen fish flopping around on the dry carpet of a BASS pro's boat?

When you get time,go and figure it out.

Both tours flip fish of lesser size in the boats, the guys with nets lay them on hot decks somethimes, as stated, some back seaters just lay the net and get back to business.

I found more skill in watching KVD land his Lake Lewisville record 11 pound plus fish on lite line with a shakey head than watching it get netted.

I find it takes more skill to land giants as opposed to the large bass that get netted on the FLW.

Nets have come along way, but slime coats do rub off with any nets, and if my memory serves me, netting and laying on the carpet as opposed to the percentage of bass in BASS that are lipped and handled without touching the carpet would aide in survival more than FLW policy.

Both tours flips bass in the boat,   Thus you get fish flopping on both tours.    One tour lands big bass by lipping, the other by netting.    Most lipped bass don't hit the carpet, where as alot of netted fish do.

I still say mano to mano makes for a more sporting chance, and better TV.

I would say yes (and I'm guilty of doing that).

I try to keep wet towel on the bottom just in case, but I'm guilty of it also once in awhile.   Trying to take precautions is all we can do as fishermen.

Those suckers are slippery and elusive at times.
