Fourth place but 1st in team standings

Featured Replies

We fished Aquia Creek on the Potomac in our club tournament.  My partner loves the place but I find it a tough place to fish.  Late into the day my partner had put all five small keepers in the livewell and I felt like I was watching "The Chris Show".  At the end of the day we went back to our favorite spot to hit it at the lowest tide of the day and another boat was leaving.  They left a huge mud trail as they left.  While my partner continued throwing his tandem spinner bait in sporadic grass, I retied everything.  I picked up the white chatterbait, made a cast, turned the handle three times and WAM!  I got bit!    I told my partner to get the net because it was a good one.  The fish was 19.5" and my only contribution to the total weight.

At weigh in the fish was only 4lbs and beat out by 4 other fish.  The big fish was 5lbs and added to a total bag of 12lbs, 14oz.  The next two places were taken by 8lb, 14oz and 8lb, 11oz.  We were last to weigh in and our total was 8lb, 9oz.  We were 2oz out of the money...DARN!  Well now I have a first, second, third and fourth in four club tournaments.

The only consolation was that we jumped from second to first in the Team of the Year standings by 5 oz.  We have one tournament left on Lake Anna on September 22nd.  Between now and then we have to figure out a way to catch a decent limit.  Practice, practice and more practice!

Congrats on a good show.

That grass can drive you crazy on the Aquia Creek and no telling how many bites you missed thinking it was a grass hook-up.

We were successful throwing finess worms on the Aquia Creek.  We fished them Texas-rigged with a 3/16 ounce bullet weight.

Too much grass for any treble hooks and they were into interested in any spinnerbaits or topwaters we threw.

You are not going to One Fish Anna?  And you think the Potomac is hard to fish?

I hope you do well on Lake Anna.  I have never done well on Lake Anna and am glad we don't have any tournaments on that Lake this year in our club.

I fish the creeks on Anna and some of the guys beat the bank with spinnerbaits, crankbaits and pointers.  They catch some bass and stripers.  In the creeks I usually hook one or two keepers, but that's all and it is hard fishing to do that all day long.

Good luck and let us know how you do on One Fish Anna.

I fished from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM last Wednesday and caught one fish.  It was 2lbs 2oz.  When we left he looked at me and said "one fish Anna".  I have read Teddy Carr's book and have a map with a bunch of spots marked up from a fisherman that has success on Anna.  I am not proficient with deep diving (10' to 20') crankbaits or carolina rigs.  My partner doesn't like to fish anything deeper than 10'.  So I have to figure something out between now and then.  The next three weeks I will be fishing only at Lake Anna.

Good luck on Anna.

Let us know what you find out and how you fish the lake.

You can PM me if possible.

Have you consider fishing off the North Anna River in Christopher Creek?  If possible, try to go under the bridge and fish the area near the end of the creek.

I would think you can still bang the bank and boat houses along the shoreline anywhere in the lake.

Are you putting in at Anna Point Marina?  IF so, have you ever gone up pgeon Run all the way back to the dam?

Who knows were the bass will be but I am like you and would rather fish the banks than go out and try to find the humps and brushpiles and other sturcture.

Of course, Teddy's book is excellent so give it a try, too.

What a way to hang tuff  ;)

Ask around here I'm sure someone can help with Lake Anna, Sam's gotta ya pointed in the right direction already.

If you decide to launch out of Anna Point make it your effort to check out the first cove to the right of the launch. Not the turn immediately after the docks there, but the cove after that first point on your right. There is a nice set of small trees that grow in the corner of the cove where I caught two small ones on Rapala Floaters early in the morning by using a twitch, twitch, slow reel approach there. There were tons jumping in the middle which I suppose I may have been able to pick off if I had changed my tactics a bit and didn't stick with just one bait in the area. I definately didn't fish it thoroughly enough. When the weather got hot early in the day it got tough. If you have a depth finder it helps.  There is a fish attractant in the middle of the cove that was placed into the lake aways back.  If you have one of the lake anna maps thats marked with these and a decent finder, you will see it.

However, during lunch in the heat of the day I took a break with my dad and fiancee and docked back up at Anna Point. I caught one that almost went for two pounds by beating the ledges and grass (which can be thick) by the dock area there. I caught mine on a 5" swim senko I was pulling from a hang up in the grass. My dad also lost a keeper right there in the grass after a minute to two minute fight, throwing a spinnerbait.

The bass hang out there in the morning because the gusy that run the shop actually feed the carp and bass with minnows before the sun comes up. Me and my fiancee watched when we went before we launched and the water was so clear you could see the bass and carp come up for the fish and fight the ducks for it. It was awesome. But they DO hang out in this area. Anyone who thinks bass are not conditioned are wrong. They come here to feed every morning from what the guy says. Just be careful because there are spots where you CANNOT fish here. The middle of the launch area to be specific.

Make it your goal to try out deep water docks around ledges or drop offs, and any grassy shoreline that has deep water access along the main lake (north side) heading up to the river. I got some nice hits up here outside the coves along the points. Later boss, hope this gives you some ideas.

Sam,

So far in my research I have talked to two guys Jim and Carl that live in my neighborhood that have won a few tournaments at Lake Anna. One likes the North Anna River way in the back and the other likes parts of North Anna and parts of Pamunkey. Teddy Carr's book covers the whole lake but he likes the Pamunkey best. My partner and I are planning on concentrating on each section from the splits up. My partner caught two yesterday and broke off on a third. Hopefully we will figure something out.

The tournament will launch out of Christopher Run.  JC, thanks for the suggestions, I will keep that spot in mind as well.  I will let you know what we figure out.
