Anyone know how to change out the Treble Hooks on a JitterBug?  The ones it came with really suck..  I lost a nice fatty today 3ft from the bank.   >

It's pretty easy.  Just unscrew the hangers on the bottom and take them off and slip the treble over that loop and put a new one on.

it will compromise the structural integrity of the bait (loosening the screw eyes will make them easier to pull out which = bad)

instead, just cut the trebel hook off at the eye, put a split ring on the screw eye, and put your fav. brand of trebel on the split ring.

I'd do it the way Dave explained. Some good replacement trebles would be Daiichi Death Traps. Crazy sharp hooks, very strong and the points stay sharp for a LONG time.

I would be one to not want to risk the fish of a lifetime lost because of a compromised screw.  

The real question is whether or not you're willing to take that risk.

I too would go the split ring route. Using the split ring would also greatly reduce any leverage a lunker might have to throw off the treble.

If you have removed the screws please unscrew them and put some Crazy Glue or Gorilla Glue or some very STRONG glue in the hole and replace the screw.

What Dave said is correct.  You can loosen the screw and it can pull out easier when fighting a fish if you have tampered with it.

Now some guys will say this is baloney.  But a word to the wise is sufficient.  

P.S. Eddie, be sure to use mono on treble hooks and use a sweeping sideways motion to set the treble hooks.

And as you know, keep the line TIGHT when fighting the fish.

this is also correct, using a split ring gives your hook a wider range of motion when fighting a fish.

if there was no split ring, the hook would be able to move a small amount, then it would be pushed against the hook hanger on the bait, and if it kept pushing, it would pop out of the fish.

with a split ring, the hook can move much more before coming in contact w/ the hook hanger.

basically what all that means is with no split ring, the amount of leverage is increased which makes it easier to pop the hooks out of the fish.

Man you guys on this forum are insainly helpful!!  thx a bunch..wish i had this info at dicks..  I would have pulled the trigger and bought some nice trebles.. but the guy at the counter said it was a seriously bad idea unscrewing them.. (at the time i thought that was the only way..)  man.. the one i lost looked to be at least 15-16"..   :'(  he ran under some weed beds and fought nasty till the d**n hook cameout.. after he ran into the beds.. it only took a second before it unhook himself..

I cried.. a lot.. i think people thought i was crazy.. i cant imagine why..
