Jigs and Soft Plastics

Featured Replies

I seem to everytime i go fishing be using crankbaits or poppers. They are usually the only thing i can catch anything on, probably because i dont know how to work jigs or anything like that. I have a couple jigs but never get a bite on them...or spinners or buzzbaits for that matter. I have been using cheap spinners and buzzbaits though. I'm not sure but is there anyone that could link some sites on tips on how to work jigs and things like that? Or just any tips in general you could throw out there and what kind of jigs and trailors work best. I only started bass fishing at the beginning of summer and have a good amount of experience for topwaters and cranks. Any help with others would be great, thanks.

two things of advice.

read all the articles on here that relate to the lure you want to learn and read through the forum archives. youll start noticing a pattern of brands and colors and techniques and favorable conditions to use them.

secondly- most importantly-  on a suitable day-  take that lure and only that lure (in a few sizes and colors) and throw it. throw it all day wheather youre catching fish or not. you will learn how to present  it and cast it. you cannot catch fish on a lure you never throw.

just my 2 cents............ :P

Guys,   to the forum. I just started catching fish on jigs a couple of weeks ago. I can tell you that I use Rage Tail chunks and craws as the trailer with my jigs. I can also tel you that you need to watch your line closely for movement so you will know when a fish picks up your bait. When you see that movement set the hook, hooksets are free. As for me, I throw mine out let it sit for a little bit and slowy hop it back to me stopping after each hop to see if it gets picked up. I hope this helps as I am not an expert on fishing jigs.

I fish with soft plastics alot. When I introduced my boys to worms and jigs,  they,    like I was at first, had no idea what to do or why to do it. That is when I took them to the neighbors pool tied on a worm and jig and showed them how diff. setups and lures react to subtle movements of the rod or line....Once they understood by site... their confidence was up and we were at Dicks buying their own.Now they love 'em too

Fishing is part of catching :P tie on the least confident worm or jig you have, throw it at all the weeds and stumps you can find, work it, when you get bit remember what got you bit and build from there.

Good luck -John

Bassfisher11,

Time and patience is all it takes to catch fish and gain confidence with jig fishing. My best advice to from the beginning is:

1) Stay shallow in 8ft or less.

2) Stay light on the weight of your line 12 lb or so, and jig maybe 1/4  oz. max

3) Stay out of the wind as much as possible so you can concentrate on you technique.

4) Stay slow on your hops, twitches and drags and maintain contact with the bottom, fish them like Tx rigged worms.

5) STAY WITH IT.

Last but not least, it is extremely helpful to use a trailer that provides great action to your jig in every situation whether it is on the fall, with the slightest movement of your rod tip or on a swimming retrieve.

I guess you can figure out which trailer I would advise...

Hope this helps you

Alright thanks!

But i just got back from Dicks and came back with some senkos, 2 booyah jigs that had rattles (wasnt sure what kind are best to get), and some rage tail chunks. Is there anything else that is something i should have that helps? Like a particular jig brand thats good or anything else?

Absolutely never throw a Jig-N-Craw in & around deep water structure they are a flipping/pitching tool only.

When you say flipping/pitching what are you talking about?

bassfisher, Catt was pullin your chain and fun'in with ya....jigs are an awesome deep water bait and he is kinda partial to'em to say the least....Pitchin and flippin is terminology that is standard in the industry for fishing relatively close to your position that wouldn't necessarily require distance that is attained from the normal casting motion.

Also flippin and pitchin is normally to known or visual cover both above and below the water surface and is normally in 15 ft or less in water depth. Basically the pitchin motion is exactly that, using the rod tip from an lowered position to swing the bait toward the desired target area. Many fishermen like to place the bait in one hand and swing the rod with the other but some of us find that we are more comfortable using the rod tip alone with a trained motion to achieve the same results. Both work just fine and each takes alot of practice to become effective and accurate.

Hope that helps and keep an eye on that ole Catt, he is a sly one that fishes more than most around and has the scars to prove it.  ;D

Somebody better check and see who's on Catts account?  Don't sound like Catt to me.  Even HE wouldn't do that to a kid. :P
