And speaking of machines, Davis acknowledged that the secret to his

success has been, well, a machine. According to Davis, about three

weeks ago, he began constructing a homemade contraption consisting of a

...series of pulleys, winches and assorted ropes in an effort to help him

get his boat in a few secretive backwater areas of the California

Delta. Assisting him in his efforts was Leon Knight, who not

coincidentally sits in second place overall in the pro standings.

We've worked on this on and off for about three weeks, said Davis.

But today we had a total mechanical failure (with the contraption).

Because of that it took us about an extra hour to get into our spot. I

don't think we got into our spot until about 10 a.m. today and because

of the tides we only had two hours to fish. We knew we had to get out

of there at noon or it would have been trouble.

While Davis wouldn't get too specific, the entrance to his primary

fishing location is filled with debris and obviously extremely shallow.

And with low tides, entering is nearly impossible.See More

I feel neither way, but the question was regarding the use of a mechanical devices to help them catch there fish they put out ahead of time. I dont see a difference between this and the question earlier about put out brush piles.

I didn't read it as that they put fish in this spot weeks ahead of time. I read that they had been building a machine for weeks that helps them get to a backwater area they probably can't get to without exiting the boat otherwise. It said that the entrance had debris and logs blocking the entrance. Sounds like they winch themselves in and out. I think it's kind of ridiculous myself and a lot of trouble but it seems to be working out for him.

Don't see the difference?  One is mechanical and being used to get to where they want to fish.  The brush piles are an enticement for fish; that's a big difference.  Both are advantages but from different angles.  Whether either is right or wrong; I can't make an argument because I don't tournament fish but figuring out a way to get to the fish seems to be fair play.

It's no different than when Roland used a jet drive boat to get to upstream locations to win a tournament when the other guys couldn't get there with their fiberglass boats with regular OB.

He prepared ahead of time to go to his fish.

in high water situations... lots of anglers bring chainsaws and shears and machetes to get back into better spots.

*shrug*

I watched that video in the other thread and never saw them using the so-called pulley system. If all it was doing was making it easier to cross over the beaver dams I don't see what the issue is, if, OTOH, they were using it to transport their boat across dry ground to enter a section of the water way not accessible due to low water then I think there's a problem. If you allow that you open things up to the imagination of the anglers which could push the interpretation of the rule book to the limits.
