Deep Diving Crankbaits

Featured Replies

Hello. I was just wondering when are the best times to use a deep diving crankbait. I'm assuming they are mainly used in the spring and fall when there are less weeds and plant growth. Also are they meant to dive deep enough to reach the bottom of the lake?

I'm just confused on when and where to use them. :-?

My favorite time is in the middle of summer with 100* temps.

It's a great summertime lure. I cast them between docks and crash them into the brush piles by the docks, usually in about 10 foot of water.

I slow roll them in 10' deep grass with a 6' deep crank that tickles the grass tips.

Crankbaits can dive to 20' or so depending on selection and line diameter.  Some folks dig the bill into the sandy bottom, like a scurrying critter.

good luck

I like deep cranks anytime the fish are deep. Lipless cranks fished on light line (if your in open water) and allowed to sink are also good when fish are deeper.

My favorite deep cranks are the excalibur fat free series, rapala fat rap, and bomber fat A's. The Luhr jensen baby hotlips is my favorite extra deep variety.
