I've been fishing the lake behind my house for over two years and this is our first Peacock. This changes everything. We have been waiting a long time for this day. We don't know if this was stocked but who cares, they're here  ;D.

If you want to be a technical timmy like me....Peacocks are actually Chichlids....lol

I have 2 links that give all 12....yes thats right 12 species of Peacocks and their story.

I too am curious where these showed up... and am not sure that it's a good thing. Could they overrun the ecosystem? This is the only thing wrong with snakeheads, which are actually an awesome game fish that's hard fighting and great eating.... but they take over an area and ruin the ecological balance.

I know that peacock bass are native to Brazil, but had never heard of them on this continent. What area are you finding them in?

The Peacocks were introduced to the South Florida (Dade/Broward) canals in the 80's by the FWC to take control over other non-native fish that have been introduced to these waters. It was a several year study before this introduction. The Peacock has had a very positive impact to our system down here. Not only in reducing the numbers of Talapia and other Chiclids but also the economic side as now South Florida is the only place in this country to catch Peacocks. So people travel in just to catch this tackle busting warriors.

Hopefully the winter will stay mild. Once temp drops below 60f they will start dying off quick.

I am glad you caught your Peacock by your home.

I saw the show on ESPN yesterday morning (Saturday, October 14) about two guys going to Brazil to fish for Peacock Bass and I would rather catch them in the good ole USA than to do what these guys did in Brazil.

Send more pics when they grow up.
