August Challenge

Featured Replies

Working on my August Challenge, 14" bass on a spinnerbait.  These are the top two so far.  Have had some really windy days this week.  The bass, though smaller, all have had full bellies.  Do fish get active and stay active longer when it's windy?  They seem to school up more.

Made a sea anchor from my anchor +  A LOT of weeds, worked ok until I wanted to drift upwind.

Yes on the wind, imo.  Good luck with the challenge.

Thanks matt.

I never threw spinnerbaits seriously until this challenge.  It's fun to learn new things.  I caught over a 14" fish today to complete it.

Man oh man, got me wanting to try a spinnerbait now!

Most people I know will only throw a spinnerbait in the wind.

The winds do have a big effect on how the fish act. There are a couple of possible effects:

With the wind coming from the bank, fish might be there for any bugs that are blown into the water.

More likely they will be on near the bank with the wind coming off the water. The wind blows the plankton to that shore, the shad follow, and the bass follow the shad.

The windy days concentrate the plankton more, so the shad concentrate more, so more bass will be there.

That evening I fished a spinnerbait (dark and light green skirt single silver willow), a white booya boogee bait, a rapala DT10 crank silver, and a black/blue jig w/ black/blue.

I caught 2 lmb and one smb on the spinnerbait.  I had one fish follow the crank to the boat but not hit it.  No action on the chatter/boogee bait.  I caught one (best fish of the outing) on the jig ripping it with a sharp pop out of deeper grass.

I usually had just fished crank baits as my fast moving bait on windy days.  I'll definitely be throwing a spinnerbait more often on windy days now and am going to try to find some with a bigger skirts for some bigger fish  :) .

(All fish caught had definitely been on the feed with full bellies)

I definitely would see a surface feeding frenzy right after a rain close to sure.
