Gotta love the community holes (occoquan res)

Featured Replies

Today my brother and I went to the occoquan reservoir for some fishin. We started off by going down lake and didn't have too much luck. We started at 6:30 and I caught 2 by 9:00, a dink on a shakey head and a 2.1 lber on a 7'' worm. We went in for some food and then decided to hit the community hole. It's an old dam that isn't used anymore with deep and shallow water all over and tons of cover. I caught 6 more and missed 2 there most on shakey heads and jigs and my brother caught 2 there and missed a few.

Here is a 4.5 lber I caught on a black/blue jig.

Hope you like my glasses  ;D

Where did you put your boat in the water. I went to Lake Ridge and it was closed due to low water conditions.

Fountainhead.

I keep looking at this picture and can't figure out how I made this fish look so small! When I caught it my brother and I thought it would go 5lbs it looked so big. On my rapala digital scale it read 4.51 lbs. I need to stop taking camera phone pics  ;D

Hope you like my glasses ;D

Are those the Elton John Signature Series Polarized Limited Editions? Ol' Elton would be proud! ;D

Seriously though, if they help you catch a bunch of fish like that, who cares! Good fishin' guys!

hahaha 5bl.

Actually I found em at the beach last week, they washed up on shore in perfect condition!

I think they are good luck because my brother only caught 1 fish today and I caught 8 which makes our yearly totals 122 to 121 and now I'm in the lead.  ;D

Whats the reservoir looking like?  How far down is it?  I would like to get out on friday.  Has the fishing been god or tough?

the water is WAY WAY down. I mean WAYY down. I'd guess between 6-10 ft down.

Well fishing anywhere besides the old dam had been a little hard for my brother and I, but others have been doing pretty well. Fish Deep. Most of my fish were in 18-30 feet of water

Nice fish!  I would think the bigger guys are way down with this heat.

Man, everywhere you go the water is low. We are in need of some serious rain.  :'(

No joke. I can't believe how low the water is...its unreal. I heard that it happened last summer as well

what dam is that? Im not to familiar with the popular fishing spots. any help would be appreciated.

I believe that would be the Occoquan dam, it seperates the upper and lower Occoquan.  I believe it is the same dam that is to the far right hand side of the Occoquan Regional Park boat ramp.  I could be wrong, but I am not aware of any other dam on the Occoquan.

thank you good sir.  ;) i'm gonna have to google map it to see if i can find my way.

Hey Matt,

I know you said you caught some nice ones on Shakey Heads.  I started finesse fishing with those not too long ago.  Caught one in Neabsco Creek doin' that.  In the 18'-30' of water, you aren't hitting bottom with those things right?  Just kinda casting out let it sink and keep wiggling the rod tip in one area, then reel in after a while recast and try another?  Any help would be appreciated.  I know in tough conditions like these that catch rates can go up quite a bit if the person knows how to finesse fish with a jig deep or with tubes or shakey heads deep.

I can't wait for mid-late fall fishing when water levels begin to rise up (pending if we get any rain).  This heat, the dry weather, and the low water all combine for poor fishing conditions.  I need to get a summer home up north in Jersey, Penn, Mass, or NH for these summer months!

I was just casting out and letting it hit bottom and just let it sit there for a while (up to a minute) and then started shaking it for a little and then let it sit again. Same with the jig just drag it instead of shaking it.

Fall should be great, I can't wait. Its right aroud the corner

Respectfully, you are mistaken.  :-)

That community hole is "Ryan's Dam", and it actually doesn't look like a dam when you see it.  It's just a bunch of submerged (and emergent) structure.  I don't mind publicly stating this, because the whole world (especially those who frequently fish the reservoir out of Fountainhead park) knows about the spot.  On tourney days, you'll find boats stacked up there like firewood.

It's just a bit up-lake from Fountainhead park.  Can't miss it.  Great spot for cranks, jigs, c-rig plastics.

Drums is right. You definetly cannot miss this thing.

I would love to get a spot there tournament day, they're always people there. They always beat us there with their "9.9's"  ;)

Thanks drums, I can't see anything from google maps except an what looks like an older bridge. I guess im just going to have to get out there and rent a boat and find it.

Can you tell I rely entirely too much on technology?  ;D

Gotta love the community holes  I think LBH would agree with this , FOR SURE

Here you go Slomoe.....

The red circle is ryans dam, the blue dots are huge (usually underwater) pylons and the blue line is a very good spot to fish besides the blue dot farthest away.

thanks big time Matt.

Sure thing

Gret post guys, and thanks for pointing me in this direstion JCRZY.

I have been fishing the rez all year and only tried the Dam once and with no luck.  I knew it had to be a decent hole, but I never knew how to fish it.  I am supposed to head out to the rez tonight for an hour or two with a bud.  Might give it a try if I can convince my partner to try somewhere new.
