Buddy and I hit a local pond for some ice fishing today, not expecting much we actually had a pretty good couple of hours. We caught around 100 bluegills between the 2 of us, 20 or so came home with us for the frying pan., along with some yellow perch, and even a few bass. All fish were caught in 12' fow on a weed edge off a large slow tapering flat, on small teardrop jigs tipped with waxworms jiggled just above the weed tops. Pretty simple stuff, but alot of fun. Not a bad way to spend a 15 degree Sat. morning.

That is a niceday of fishing.  Didn't have much time to sit still, huh?

Nice!

How many B/G does it take to make a serving? I know, for me, 2-3 yellow Perch is a serving (4-6 fish sticks) but always wondered about gills.

Also, is it a basic filet, just thin? (w/ Perch, I only used the backstrap. but gills are shaped different)

3-4 of them are enough for me, with a 10 or so to feed me, wife and child, I usually keep any gills that are 7" to 10", smaller and bigger go back. I fillet them just like I do perch, cut in behind the gill plate, down the back, take the ribs out, then the skin. Perch usually have more meat, but there is planty on a bluegill

Bluegills, perch and bass?  Over 100 fish?  Man, sounds like you and your buddy had an awesome day.  Good times, good times.

thats a good day. I'll bet those blue gills were tasty

Sounds like my experience last Saturday. Went ice fishing with a buddy for bluegill using waxworms. Except we caught about 50 or so and kept em all....actually he let me keep them all  :) My freezer should be stocked for a little while anyway. They did taste good that night too.

Are bluegill that ez to catch? Sounds like it if you catch 50 -100 in a day !
