How often does this happen? (wierd)

Featured Replies

I went to my golf course bass haven was doing very good, had like 20 fish, a few real nice ones.  Earlier in the afternoon I missed a very large fish while using a U/L combo, occasionally I use it out there to throw little in-lines and small spinners of sort.  Needless to say I lost a 7 possible 8 lber just because I couldn't keep the small treble hook in her mouth with the U/L.  Well I was about to wrap it up so I decided to throw the spinner a few more times and sure enough on the first cast with it I hook a 14 inch fish around 1.5 lbs.  I fight the fish right up to the shore about 3/4 feet from it and my bass get swallowed.  I am in shock as this monster of a bass swims off slowly with my 1.5 lb bass headfirst in it's mouth still hooked to my in-line spinner.  I have and U/L rod and reel with 6lb test on it, I am in trouble.  I pulled back just to see if she still had the smaller bass and she did so I set up a little hoping the hook would find a way into the monsters mouth and POP the 6 lb mono breaks a quick as it all happend.  So I guess I was wondering if this has happend to any of you guys out there.  If I had to guess the fish in question had to be 27 inches long, and 10 plus for sure.  Sorry about the long read.  Here's some of the nice ones I got the other day.

Yep this has happened to me. I wouldn't say the size of your Florida Monsters lol. I have had small 8-12" dinks get engulfed by 3-4lbers. I have had a 2.5 lber get nailed by a 30"+ Pike. The pike didn't hold long enough for me to know for sure but I saw it breach water and it sure scarred the hell out of me!

I'm thinking a 14 inch swimbait in baby bass may be in order??! :o

I've never had this happen to me, but I've heard of it happening. It seems odd that the larger fish would eat something as big as something that is 15% of itself.

It happens all the time at one of the ponds I fish. The larger bass in there steal the biggest Bream we catch right off of the hook. I've never seen one go after a Bass though.

Crazy Kev,

Have had catfish take bluegills but never had a bass take a bass or any other fish.

Had sharks take grey trout when fishing in Louisiana.

Great story.  :)

Never first hand happened to me but I found two bass stuck like that one time..... fishing a pond when I was probably 9, I came across a 2.5lbr with a 1.5lber wedged in his mouth. Both fish had floated to the surface and were dying from the incident. After several unsucessful attempts to pull them apart I finally pulled out my pocket knife and slit the mouth of the larger fish to get the smaller one out. The smal one ended up dying but the the large one swam off alright, although dazed. Weirdest thing ever.

Bass can be crazy aggressive, sometimes I think they just close their eyes and swim as fast as they can with their mouths open.  :)
