Rice Lake, Ontario- My fishing trip

Featured Replies

Hey there. I'm 14 and my dad and I went fishing last year on Rice Lake for the 1st time. We launched off at the west end of the lake, went to about the middle and drifted back fishing the shorelines. We were out for a good 8 hours. We had caught 5 decent bass, 2-3 pounds each, all on a 10 inch worm. It was over cast the whole day with some rain in the morning. Then 3:00 came around. The sun came out, I threw on a spinner-bait and started nailin bass. I caught 4 bass within 10 minutes. One being a 4.6 pound smallie, which is my biggest bass to date. My dad had the same luck to.

So we  drifted along the shore for another hour or so until we were 100 yards from where we launched. We were still throwin a spinner bait, using 20 pound test flurocarbon, on bait cast out fits. My dad throws his spinner bait 10 feet past this pile of slop..reels it in and right next to the slop BAM. Musky. My dads biggest, he could tell it was his biggest by far, from when it jumped completely out of the water. So he decides to hand the rod to me. im like dad  :-/ what do i do im gonna lose this fish. he just laughed at me and said oh well now your gonna know how a musky fights. of course this thing is reefing out line, so, afraid of killing this beautiful fish, we had no choice but to tighten the drag in hopes of getting it in. This is ten minutes in to the fight and we have it up to the boat, and you get that first whiff of musky. To me it smells like blood and steel. Its terrible. My dad reaches in, grabs it by the gills and pulls up this monster musky- 51 inches. I was shaking because i was so excited, but then my dad takes out the spinner bait, (which was just destroyed) and says "ok Dylan, are you ready to release it?"

I just laughed and said whatever dad, but he was serious, so i had to gill this musky, and put it back in, my arm was already dead because of the fight this fish gave off, but it was a relatively quick release. she got in the water , was there for about 10 seconds, and took off from my hand.

Thats my fishing story. 8-)

P.S. Always carry a camera, because of course we didnt have one :P

Sounds like overall you guys had a full day.  Great job getting that musky in.  The 51"er is well worth a bent up spinner.  Congratulations on you pb smallie too.  A stellar day of fishing.  8-)

Congrats on your pb smallie and the great outing with your dad. Nice report and thanks for sharing!  ;D

I fish Rice Lake quite a bit, but do prefer other places. The lake is amazing for it's fishery. The only problem with the lake is all those guys in their huge boats blazing by. It makes fishing really tough. There's too much traffic on the lake, but I'm glad you had a great time.
