Skunk Must Be My Middle Name

Featured Replies

Well i have been out i cant count how many times in the last 4-6 weeks and i have thrown everything from power worms, senkos, to spinners, buzz baits, crankbaits, and Rattle Traps but seems all i catch are 6 inch bass if that or the tree and loose my bait. Getting very frustrated but i know my luck has to turn around at some point. Fishing a clear to stained pond with tons of Milfoil, and I'm on the shore so their is not much option and don't know the topography of the pond which makes it hard too. I see guys pulling nice bass out of it but heck if i know how to lol. Anyway keeping my head up and gonna try anything i can think of.

i have the same problem as well

Try live bait to kill the skunk. ;)

SWH, find out what these guys are using ;)...

skillet

get a float tube, canoe or a crappy cheap john boat. for under $100 you can get off the shore and get to where the fish are. craigs list is your friend

Skillet unfortunatly i live in a neighborhood where the population is mostly older people. So me being 20 something i walk up and start a friendly chat about fishing but they are all so tight lipped cant get a clue what they use... Gonna have to break out the binocculors lol... I dont get it i can share what info i know with whoever especially younger kids but these older guys feel as though they are gonna break some law by talking with me about their tactics.. Oh well

KMS I am on it i just have to save some money but your right the two guys i do see with canoes and john boats are killing it. Just have to get some extra dough. Anyway thanks for your help guys.

Well, you can tell a lot by how they fish.

Are they fishing REAL slow? You can pretty much tell by how they are retrieving/holding the rod whether they are crankin, rollin a spinner, working plastics/jigs etc...

Most likely, they're using something you've already tried but the presentation is different. Just pay attention next time to the speed of retrieve, and the action they are imparting to the presentation.

Try weightless, slow retrieves, and also try adding weight and speeding it up a little bit for worms.

Also try slow rolling a spinner by structure or grass.  Good luck!

Thanks for the advice... i will try this next time i see them out... i know one of the guys is trolling a bait behind his john boat that seems to get an enourmous amount of bites. I will try and see what the other guys are doing will report back when i see them next thanks...

Dude your catching fish, you just have to elimiante the little ones to get to the big fish. When you are skunked, you do not catch any fish.

I feel your pain buddy.  I've been having a hell of a time catching anything decent lately too.  All summer actually.  That's not saying I've caught nothing.  But it wasn't like it was last summer.  I'm just in my 20's too, and constantly trying to keep learning.

The best advice I can offer is to be patient and try not to get stubborn.  Those are my two worst enemies.  Some days I waste every jig flip I make because I can't get myself to take the time I need to work it properly.  First I simply try to get a grip on myself and focus on what I need to do.  That doesn't always work though.  When it doesn't I switch myself to a spinner bait or something else that moves quicker.

Usually it's the fish you have to adjust to, but sometimes it's yourself you need to adjust to... If that makes any sense  :D

Well i was able to break the skunk streak... Went out and started off like normal, cast cast cast... Loose my rattle trap in the tree right after i saw a bass chasing it all the way to shore. tied on a spinnerbait which i was not as confident in but had been reading how a lot of people where having success with it. So i tied on a white spinner with blue tips and saw a fish jump and was able to cast to that area 3 or 4 times and it was game on. Wasnt anything to write home about but was a relief to finally get off the skunk. Nice little #1.5 LMB. Cant wait to get back out...
