VA - Snakehead hunt 2009 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Went out with Slip Gun and Potomac Angler today to go for some snakeheads and bass. I have been wanting to cross snakeheads off of my freshwater-fish-to-catch list for some time and Potomac Angler has given me some great advice and guidance in a high population area.

We fished right after low tide with frogs and spinnerbaits.

Potomac Angler caught a handful of bass including a nice 5.5lb

And then it finally happened. Slip Gun missed a hit on his frog so I threw right back to the area as he retrieved his bait. KABOOM! Snakehead time! Ended up winching this baby out of the weeds:

Slip Gun dispatched it with a few oar strikes to the head (or so we thought) about an hour later we were back at the ramp. I picked the fish up to take it out of the bottom of the boat and it started flopping around again. It is currently sitting in a cooler with ice on my deck and I wouldn't be too surprised if it still had some life in it.

I must say that was one of the more enjoyable fishing trips Ive ever had :) Thanks to both of you for such an awesome afternoon.

FYI beating snakeheads with an oar is rather fun.  8-)

Nice, those Snakeheads do seem do be hard to get a hook into.  I have located a couple that i'm going to try to catch on Friday and Saturday.  How did that one fight?  With the ones I have caught, I have been so excited, I didn't pay too much attention to the fight.

Well its hard to gauge the fight since we are catching them out of the slop right now but in open water the snakhead is a much gamier fish and puts up more of a fight than a bass. They are more likely to launch themselves clear out of the water also. I've have some get close to if not 3 feet out. It's also a size thing, the chances of you catching a 5lb+ SH compared to a bass is alot more favorable. That is if you can catcvh SH's pretty frequently. You need to find out the pattern in your area. I'd give up mine but I dont want people overfishing my neck of the woods. ::)

And that bass read 7 on a spring scale but 5.5 on a digital....I'll average it and say it was a 6 lol

We deff need to go out again when its not so d**n windy guys, it was alot of fun today, best part for me had to be the "Mr. beats a fish on the head paddle guy"!

Well, I think I have a pattern now.  Lately though, I havent been able to fully get a hook into a Snakeheads jaw.  They have very hard mouths.  I have seen them strike and had them on for second and then, they are off.  It happened with the last two that I almost caught.

what are you throwing? I can tell you that spro frogs or similar work the best for me

Spro frogs + braided line should help get the hook in. A heavy and long flipping stick is an added bonus.

Yep, Spro frog with a 7 foot 6 Heavy Daiwa Zillion Flipping Stick with a 7.3:1 gear ratio Daiwa Zillion Reel.  I brought along my Zillion that is spooled with mono though because I was mainly going to throw a spinnerbait and shallow cranbait that day.  I don't like bringing 2 rods and reels when my dad can't drop me off and I have the day off. It's a long walk from my house. When I bring my boat out though, I will bring a reel with braid, one with Mono, and one with fluorocarbon(and more).

The braid will help a ton. Good luck dude.

Thanks, and tell me how you like that Snakehead, they taste great.

unless your're fishing deep and need the extra stretch for something like walleye i dont thing we need flouro or mono on our reels, imo braided is good for most of the applications around here

Most of my fishing is done in water deeper than 10 feet In some lakes around the area.  I don't fish the lower Potomac too much anymore.

Nice snake head

Sounds like a great trip! I caught all of my snakeheads on either a topwater popper bait or a frog. I also found them in shallow water where they came off of the weeds or pads on shore in really dingy water.
