tried new lake

Featured Replies

I was at BPS the other day and one of the sales associates told me about a lake in my area that is only open on occasional Saturdays and only part of those days. He said the average fish caught is 3lb. I was really looking forward to trying this place out. So, got up with my 12 year old daughter and we headed out for a look see. Boy was I dissapointed, I was not expecting to see sooo much vegetation. Lily pads galore(not upset at that) but all kind of gunk on top and subsurface. Water was very shallow also. I tried a ribbit frog and then a wacky rigged senko, no luck. A guy and his kid were pulling in small sunfish and blue gill and a couple small smallmouth but not much else. The shore line only had a couple of places that were workable everywhere else hard to get to because of over growth. How would you guys fish this kind of environment? The volunteers at the check in site swear that the fishing is good but I don't see how. Also there are no boats allowed of any kind. :-/

I fish a pond that is very similar to your situation. It has a lot of weed and very hard to catch fish on anything other than a weightless t-rig or weedless wacky rig senko/finesse worm. Make your casts shorter and target open areas in the patches of weeds. If you happen to land on weed, reel it in and let it fall into the open areas. Work it slowly back to the bank.

After a hard rain, the pond cleans up a bit as well.

Don't give up. I am once of the few people who catches fish at this place. At first I had the same impressions.

If the person said they have caught 3lbers. It's worth sticking to it.
