HELP ME PLEASE

Featured Replies

I fish in a small city pond that is stocked with bass and is relatively new.  I know that there are bass at least 15 inches long because ive caught a few.  but not enough i'v only caught 2 in the last couple of months.  i caght them witha night crawler on a carolina rig not expecting them.  the pond is about 15 feet depp along the shore and only about 8-10 in the middle at least that is what i have heard about it.  hardely anyone fishes there anymore.  i would like to take advantage of this little beuty but i dont know what lure to use exactly.  please help me.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Without knowing the specifics of what kind of cover that you have available in the body of what that you are talking about, there are three different lures that I would recommend.

You mention the depth.  So, my first mention would be a medium running crankbait.  Take note of what forage is in there, such as sunfish and other bluegills, or if there are shad or shiners.  Match the crank to the colors of the forage.  If there are crawdads, match the colors to the crawdads.

Next, and this is a big IF..........if the water is relatively clear, say, 4-5 ft. deep, I would go with a suspending jerkbait.  I would jerk, jerk, pause.  I would pause between the jerks, and make the long pause as long as I needed, and I would work with the lengths of the pauses to suit what the bass are wanting.

Lastly, if you are looking to see just how many bass are in there, I would use a drop shot and either use a reaper tailed lure, or either a finesse worm.  The clarity of the water would dictate which colored worms I would use.  In clear water, go with natural colors.  In slightly stained water, I would step it up to dark or bright colors.

As for the cranks and the jerkbaits, you may have to experiment with models that have rattles, and those that do not.

again provided there is some cover like weeds or structure, you should take the time to hunt these out.  away to find out whats on the bottom is a c-rig, lizards, or worms work.  i whole heartedly agree with the crank bait, i would have given that first dibs at the water.  if there are weeds dont over look, weightless senkos, or t-rigs.  since you know there are 15 in bass in there you could start with a  5 inch senko.  spinnerbaits will allow you to cover alot of water quickly to see where the fish may be.  if the is an inlet to the pond, be it drainage  pipes, this may be a place to look for bass looking for a meal to come to them.  shaded areas might possibly hold fish, a good place for a small to medium size jig or t- rig craw.  you can also try a yamamoto shad shape worm, for a surface wounded minnow action.  if there is submerged trees/bushes that may be a good place to look for fish, usually a few will hang out there.  spinnerbaits will hang up less here.  but find structre and cover and youll usually find fish.  like nw said try to match your lure coices to whats found in the pond.  good luck.

if its a new pond, those will probably hit just about anything.  a new pond or lake is a great place to fish.

If nobody else is fishing the pond like you said I would go in the mornings and evenings and throw a buzzbait.
