Like fish

Featured Replies

I don't even fish, but I live on a lake.  I like the process of fishing because I meet a lot of fishermen, and they are all nice people.   Anyway, I would like to encourage the bass population in my lake, so I have so far figured out that bass like to eat bluegills.

I have seen bluegills around my dock, and I am wondering what kind of fish food I could feed the bluegills.  Is there some kind of inexpensive available food that bluegills like?   :)

hog pellets too, or bread

What is your purpose for feeding the blue gills? If you have bass in the lake, the blue gills aren't going  to grow too big anyway. I remember when I was a child, my Grand Parents had a small farm pond, and they take a loaf of day old bread or a box of old crackers, dry cerial and feed the gills. They like other things better, such as insects and worms. But the bread is easier to do.

Most people feed the bluegill so they will live around the dock and in-turn attract more bass.

rice crispies ceral nice and small so they can eat it easy and the some might float down and atract some cat fish maybe.

Now that you've got the 'gill's concentrated, if you'll just let me know where that dock is located, I'll gladly skip a tube around it and try to give any bass nearby some excersize. NICE country up there!!

The first thing I would do is find out if there are bass in the lake, this maybe easier if you could find who manages the lake, state or local.

If not have some stocked and sit back and let nature works its stuff, who ever manages the lake may stock it.

If bass are present but not in larger numbers you may have to stock more or see about getting a slot limit enforced on the lake, that is, bass within a certin length can not be kept.

Also, take a weekend and do nothing but catch the bluegill, this will give you a good idea of the size of the bluegill and they can tell you if there are any bass in the lake.

If there is a large number of small bluegill this can indicate that bass are not there or that there is a small population of bass.

You are right in that bass eat bluegill, they love to eat bluegill.

Its all about predator and prey, you always want a good blance.

Hope this helps,

Alfred

I think I would feed them bread and that sometime attracts ducks. Little kids like ducks. Might be good , might be bad ???
