Feeding Bass?

Recommended Posts

Guest avid

Did you ever hear of putting wheat or something in a cove to attract bass?  I just started hearing about this recently.  I thought maybe it was something to attract the baitfish, but I'm not sure.  I recently heard of some large bass being caught this way.

Bales of wheat are being placed by a researcher somewhere in coves to control certain types of algal blooms. I don't know why that seems to be working.

It is illegal here, but I have heard of guys using cormeal by tying it up in a burlap sack. This chums the minnows and baitfish.

i know a guy (he's my brother in law, but, i'm not proud of it) who has feeders set up in some of his ponds like ray scott had in his.

he let us take the grandkids one afternoon @feeding time & it was "amazing."  you could put  your hand in the water & the fish (mainly bream) would nip at your fingers. there were hundreds of them!

he let me fish in it ONE time for an hour or so.  i threw a trap around the feeder & it would never get to the bottom.  the first fish or so was fun, but, after awhile, it was just "winding them in."   i don't know how many i could have caught if i'd have spent a whole/half day.  ...but, anyway, i'll never know, he let me know it was a "one time deal"...he was raising fish for HIM to catch.  he doesn't even let his brothers go.

does it sound like i don't get along with him???? Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Baiting and chumming are legal here, but I don't know anyone that focuses on bass.  I always thought it was mainly to draw in baitfish and used mostly to attract catfish, we have done that.  Most souring grains will work for that purpose sorgham, maze, wheat, corn or a mixture, even things like 30% Range Cubes for cattle can be set out in buckets or sacks, cut a bunch of 1/2 inch holes in them first, however the sweeter smelling the mix is the better it works on carp.   I hear putting out a Magot or "Roadkill" feeder are also supposed to work really well and might work better for bass, if you can get that close.

A lot of guides here in Florida bait holes for shiners and later take their clients there to fish .Oatmeal works great.

I've seen ads for that Ray Scott feeder.  If I remember he also sells feed that looks like big bags of dog food.
