Fishing fertilized lakes

Featured Replies

I noticed in early spring while fishing in a State Managed lake the water was clear and I could see fish swimming. Then in late spring they fertilized the lake which caused water clarity to be poor (moss green color). Why do they fertilize lakes and what is the best way to fish a newly fertized lake for Large Mouth Bass.

I have been catching too many bass under 12" .

The reason why lakes are fertilized is to increase the productivity of the water. The base of the food chain is formed by plankton, part of it is called phytoplankton ( microscopic plants ) and zooplankton ( microscopic animals which feed on the phytoplankton ), larger animals like shiners, minnows, alewifes are planctonic feeders, gamefish during a part of their stage ( fry ) are also planktonic feeders. Increase the food source they will grow in size and in numbers, the result is more and heavier fish.

Treat a fertilized lake like you would do with murky or muddy water. Sound, vibration, dark or hot colors, strong hydrodinamic signature, flash is what you need in your baits to attract the attention of fish.

Thanks Raul!!!  Your reply helps alot and sounds very logical.

Also, what is a good way to make sound fishing with a Zoom Trick worm? And what would be good examples of the type baits you mentioned for shallow water 2'-5' ?

Spinnerbaits emit vibration and flash

Lipless crank emit vibration ( non rattle ) and sound ( rattles )

Fat body cranks have a strong hydrodynamic signature, emit strong vibration because the wobble, many have rattles which adds sound to the equation.

C tail worms emit vibration

Metal flakes in your soft plastics add flash

Flourescent colors like firetiger, orange, chartreuse are HOT colors, very visible even under high turbidity. Black, red shad, tequila shad, greem pumpkin, watermelon are good examples of dark colors.

Add a glass bead between the hook and the sinker when you tie a trickworm, that will make a clacking sound every time you twitch or hop the worm.

violet purple is my #1 color in that kind of water. Even crankbaits I use purple back lime or chart sides.
