Top Water Help

Featured Replies

Hey guys I went fishing yesterday about 8pm or so. Istarted throwing the Strike King "spit n' king" Any way that was the only lure I took so that I would be forced to work with it. I had three or so Strikes or Taps. I was wondering why they almost seem to roll over the bait but they didn't TAKE it. I did finally get two bass (IT WAS AMAZING !!!!) but what do you all think I need to get more fish on?

I have been told that when bass strike like they did on your lure then you need to slow down the presentation.  I tried it myself and it worked.  I couldn't believe it.

There is nothing like a bass hitting a topwater bait.  I just love it.

I'm gong to the old pond at 5:30 or so When I do go i tend to do the twitch 3 times and let the rings fade away and then again, where do I slow down? Hey on another note I just got some free lures from Bearpaw They look and smell great If I catch some some fish later Im going to be a bear paw man because Bass Assasins are getting too pricy for me.

You might even want to try speeding up your presentation.  I've found that alot of times that will produce agressive strikes from those finicky bass.  As for the three twitches and pause, maybe you should just try one twitch and pause.  Sometimes it takes a little experimenting but once you figure out want they want it's well worth it.

could need to speed up or slow down. you need to try different retrieves to see what will get the fish to strike. sometimes they are only slashing at the bait. they may not be trying to hit it.

So I went back today and caught a pounder with these wal mart worms that I had. Afterwords I said now top water... NADA!!! I stopped it ,I slowed it ,Ichugged it ,I poped it ,You name it  finally I was casting and retriving real fast and every so often I would lift the rod top, By the time that I would stop there would be BASS just looking at my bait. NO bites but they looked at it like there was an accident on the highway,   Guys lemme know if you have any thing that will get me some good bites.Does the time have anything to do with it? what about the level where the suns at?

A topwater bite isn't a given on any lake.  I will start with a topwater right around the time the water hits in the lower to mid 60's.  I'll throw it on and off while I'm fishing in the morning, if I get interest I'll concentrate on fishing it. If I get nothing I move along to subsurface baits.   The big thing with topwater is to vary your retrieve until you find what draws the best strike.  Another thing you could try is changing topwater baits if they're following.  If you're throwing a spitting type bait and they're following or rolling on the bait without taking it regardless of your retrieve you might want to switch up to a prop type bait like a devils horse or heddon torpedo.  Another bait I really like is the Strike King Spit n Image.  It's a walker bait with a loud rattle built in.

If you get a swirl or strike on a topwater, whatever you do, don't give up on it.  Change baits or retrieve speeds or action you impart into the bait.  I had a 5 1/2lber blow up on a bait about 3 seconds after it had touched down on the water. It looked like a great white coming 3/4 of the way out of the water to engulf the bait. I had just got my reel clicked in.

Also, if you miss a fish, it's not a bad idea to toss a senko or other soft plastic right back in to where the fish last hit. Sometimes the fish will turn around and hit the soft plastic thinking it's the injured object it just struck at.

Cool and great Idea I just looked up those Devils Horse and they look kinda cool. Hey with those what do you do just reel r' in and let the props do the work?

if a bass is following and not hitting or nudging something about the bait aint quite right.not the right color or size or shape or action.usually in that situation if you cant change baits do something where the fish dont get a good look at it and strike out of instinct(reaction strike)sometimes no matter what you do they aint gonna hit it!

No, you just don't reel r in.  Cast, let it sit, give it a pop to spin the props, let it sit, repeat.

Vary the amount of time inbetween jerks.  Sometimes a really erratic, quick action will get attention, sometimes long pauses inbetween jerks is what does the trick.
