map reading

Featured Replies

Would anybody mind helping me read this map I don't have any experiance with these sort of maps and could really use some pointers.  From just looking at it, there appears to be a river channel there obviously since they dammed a river and I see some road beds as well along with some fish attractors there too.  I am really confused as to what the numbers are that are on it.  Sorry for a dumb question I have just never had to use a lake map before and will be fishing this lake a couple times this summer.http://www.bassfishingweekly.com/ohiolakemaps/East%20Fork.pdf

The numbers on the narrow light colored lines indicated depth or depth from full pool level.  If those are the numbers you are looking at.

bassnut, from the map that is one nice looking lake to fish.

the contour lines with the numbers tell you the depth changes, on this map they used 20' intervals for most of the map, a good map uses 5' intervals.  the Legend they used here is telling you what cover or structure the lake has and where it is found, very nice feature and the old road bed.

not sure if this is what you were looking for.

hope it helps,

Alfred

The dark thick line winding down the lake is the main river channel. Where the light blue lines are far apart you have a gentle slope or flat, while lines packed close together indicate a steep slope, usually at outside channel bends digging into a hill. Old roadbeds are the dotted line extensions of surface roads, in that case, still in existence. Usually submerged road intersections with creeks and rivers indicate a probably bridge location, often reduced to rubble (blasted)before flooding the lake to remove obstructions in the river while flooding it, or have it lie barely below the surface at low pool. The map legend explains the rest of the features.
