Big Bait Little Bass?

Recommended Posts

Went to my local pond today to throw some swimbaits I havn't used including the SPRO BBZ-1 Shad and a few frogs just to test them out.

This got me thinking will the BBZ Shad catch dinks or only Larger bass? I know they are Largemouth and the lure will fit in thier mouth but do dinks eat somthing this big? (Not that I want one but at this point anything will do)

I guess what im getting at is How big is too Big?

Ha Ha. When you read of guys catching big bass on swimbaits, they are almost always talking about real swimbaits and those real swimbaits are usualy big baits. The smallest baits that consistantly produce big bass are probably around 5in and represent what big bass eat. The spro shad is a very small swimbait it is not a big fish bait. It is a numbers bait or a tournament bait. I am not bashing it at all, I think its a neat little bait and I dont think its cheap. I am just trying to give you realistic expectations. All baits will catch big and little fish. Some baits just tend to catch bigger fish on average but those same baits will catch dinks just like a tiny dropshot worm will catch a big fish every once in a while. Where I fish, Big bass dont realy feed on the shad too much. unless they are under the the smaller bass picking off the ingured. I would classify all the "new" shad baits as made for targeting 1 1/2 -4lbers with an ocasional better fish. Your bait is not even close to too big. Dont be afraid to throw it.

I agreee with Matt in the fact that five inches and up is best for larger fish. I use the smaller shad baits to target fish from one to maybe five pounds at the most. I may catch a larger fish on them here and there but mostly it will be smaller fish. If I only want to catch six pound fish and up I am going to be using a larger bait. I do think you can get too big even for bigger fish sometimes but that bait will be a lot bigger than that little shad bait. I have also caught some fish under twelve inches including a crappie and big bluegill on that shad bait so it will catch the little ones.
