The clearance sale will be worth it (not like walmart had much to choice from)

Actually I believe Wal-Mart sells some fish catching lures.I have noticed that selection differs from area but some of my go-to lures are at Wal-Mart.Just to name a few:

Spot Remover Jigheads(in Missouri anyway)

Bandit 100 and 200

DD22

Shad Raps

Rat-L-Traps

FLW Finesse Worms

Booyah Baby Boo jigs

Yeah...I know color selection there isn't the best.

I wasn't aware of this.  My Wal-mart has a lot of Zoom Brush hogs.  If there is a clearance sale, I'll have to drop in and see if I can clean them out.

My wife works for them. Has for a long time. In this area, they are phasing out all high end gear. No more good reels. no more decent rods. Just the cheap stuff will be left. They will still stock a small selection of tackle, hard and soft baits, tackle boxes, etc.

Before everyone gets all excited, the article starts off with "Rumor has it ..."  That said, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the rumor was true. It is no secret that the majority of Wal-Mart employees assigned to the "fishing" area are so clueless that it is pathetic.  I always expect one of them to ask "do you want fries with that?

Wal Mart is phasing out any merchandise that isn't making money.  They have eliminated gun sales in a great many stores.

I visit two stores on a regular basis.  My local WM and the one in my in-law's hometown.  My local store hasn't been restocking their high-end reels (Daiwa, Shimano) over the last year.  That I can understand and they have had the same reels for at least the last year.  They still carry a good selection of baits, line, etc.

The other store clearanced all of their premium reels late last summer and have not restocked them.

I have heard from several sources that WM intends to transition into a more Target-like store.  Which is bad news for outdoorsmen in general.

That wouldnt surprise me if WM did that. I buy very few things in a year, not counting licenses I probably spend less than $20 in a year there for fishing stuff. I usually go to the sporting good store here or buy online. It is nice to have them for those last minute things.

I don't know about phasing out all their fishing gear but I did hear their phasing out alot of their high end gear and all their high end reels. My Wal-Mart marked quite a few items half off about 2 months ago. Certain selections of high end Lures, Spinners and Soft Plastics and they had all their display reels marked down 25-50%.
