This may be my imagination but, have you ever noticed when largemouth start getting around that eight pound and above mark they get that distinct eye bulge? It's almost like their eye is too big for their body. Does anyone know what causes this? The reason I bring this up, last summer my brother hooked the largest bass I have ever witnessed in person, without a doubt this was a double digit fish. When he got it to the boat I could not help from noticing this fish's eye was as big as a quarter, and it had that eye bulge. The fish ended up getting off seconds later due to drag failure on the reel. :'( (At least that's what we were blaming it on when we were wiping tears from our eyes. ;D)

from what i've read, the eye "bulge" comes with age.  as the bass gets older it's eyes bulge out more.

It's weird where you put weight estimate for bulging eyes.  That's exactly where I put it at .... 8 lbs.

I also have a nightmare from one last year.  She jumped about 10 ft from the boat, revealed her bug eyes to me, and threw my jig right back in my face.  No doubt it would have been the biggest bass of last year.  I vividly remember her eyes. :'(

Maybe they're bulged out so there is more room to fit food????

Not that I've ever caught one myself but I think around here it's something seen in 10lb plus fish.  At least that's what others have told me.

Like NEBassMan said, the eyes bulge with age. If you compare a northern bass with a florida one, the northern ones seem to get an eye bulge at a smaller size than the florida ones. Case in point; Last year I caught a 4 pounder in virginia with who's eyes were biginning to bulge. Later I caught a florida 6 pounder whos eyes were also at an early bulging stage. No matter the cause, it is an interesting phenomenon.

The features on my last 2 pbs (6lbs, and 5-11) were both normal. But one five pounder i caught a couple of years ago had giant bulging eyes. It comes with the aging process, not necissarily size.
