Fishing in the wind...

Featured Replies

Gee I hate to follow Muddy and Craven with a not funny post

but it's not my fault, I swear

anyway, where I live on Florida's treasure coast it is windy virtually all of the time.

I really get a chuckle when I read about guys questioning whether they should launch in 15mph wind.

That is a typical wind speed down here.  Gusts of 20 -25 are not uncommon.

So I fish in the wind ALOT>

Two things.

first.  there are always coves and leeward areas where it is calmer.  Get to know those spots and the wind factor is greatly reduced.

second. Don't give up on any bait.  If it's too windy to fish a senko or weightless finesse worm, but that is all the fish want then go to a drop shot rig.

second (again) - I don't know nothin bout no drift socks, but I'll put out a home made anchor.  On a 15 mph wind it gives me a beautiful drift for pitching a jig.

second (last time) I'm no spinnerbaiter Lord knows, but when the wind is really kickin' up I will sometimes throw a 1/2 oz double willow into the wind with success.

second (really the last time) - big spashy topwaters get generate humongous strikes in the wind.

Any time you find yourself complaining about the wind tie on a big spook or Devils horse and work it aggressively.  You may find yourself praying for wind.

make wind your friend!
