You did the right thing.  Besides, what other option did you have?  

I too hate to see fish die because I caught it.  It kills me.

    I had that happen to me once too. Bummer, but I don't think there is anything else you could have done. I was always brought up to believe that if you kill a fish you should eat it. But you didn't have the option. Don't beat yourself up.
