Fishing on overcast, cloudy days

Featured Replies

I've noticed a trend since Summer began.  I've been doing very well on sunny, clear days.  But when it has been cloudy and overcast or foggy I'm not catching anything.  For example, this morning I got out on the lake by 5:30am.  There were bass hitting top-water all around me, so it's not like they weren't biting.  I was fishing with a Rebel Pop-R which I usually have great results with when the bass are hitting on the top.  But this morning, not one bite.  I understand you have to change your techniques with the changing conditions.  I usually start with what works on clear days, and when I realize that isn't working I change.  But nothing I change to has been successful.  When the bass were hitting top water this morning I tried a buzz bait, and a jitterbug with the same results.  I changed colors on my soft plastics.  I've been using white on clear days and doing great.  I tried pumpkin seed and red shad, nothing.  It's just frustrating me.  I stayed until 11:30 and didn't even get a single bite.  Yesterday morning it was sunny and clear.  I fished from 9-3 and caught 8 bass (which is good for me).  Then it started getting cloudy and they just stopped biting.  It stormed, and I came back yesterday evening, after the rain, and didn't get a bite. When it's cloudy or overcast, I feel like I try everything and nothing works.  Can anyone help, or offer any suggestions?

Man, I'd love to offer advice, but what's happening to you is just the opposite of the way it usually goes for me :-?

I love those misty mornings and the overcast conditions.  Add just a slight hint of a breeze and things are good. :)

Definitly the opposite for me too.

You don't want to use chrome finished or reflective finishes on cloudy days.

try dark colors, or go to the other extreme and go with bright gaudy colors.

but the reflective finishes tend to act like mirrors and instead of flash which makes them highly visible they mirror the overcast and the fish don't see it as well.

yeah, that's what I thought you guys would say.  In the past I've heard people say that it's best to fish on days like these.  On clear days, I've been doing well with white Paca Toads T-Rigged, and pumpkin seed Senkos.  In the evening, on clear days, I've been doing VERY well with the Rebel Pop-R in the vicinity of brim.  But on cloudy days, these things don't work for me.  What else should I try?

Your lure selection doesn't sound all that bad.  Have you tried varying the retrieves?  A Pop-R can be just "blooped" with pauses.....it can be literally "burned" across the water.....or it can be "walked" like a Zara Spook.  Vary speed retrieves with buzzbaits.  Change speed a couple of times during the retrieve.  I'll give you a tip given to me by a local fisherman here on Ky Lake for use when fish are hitting shad on top and won't pay any attention to "normal" lures.  He absolutely swears by a Roostertail dragged thru the shad.  Says bass will hit that when nothing else will work.  Never tried it myself, but what the heck....can't hurt!
