cover?

Featured Replies

Generally what is the concensus on how long you should wait to fish new cover. A local watering hole had a tree blow over. How much time should one give until you fish it.

Generally a new laydown will attract fish fairly soon but then the sap and decay begin it will produce an acidic mix in the surrounding area that will repel fish for a long time. Different trees produce different amounts of acidity and therefore the time that it takes for fish to come back varies from species to species. Pine produces a lot of acidity compared to a maple. I'd say fish it, if you catch fish keep fishing it, if not wait till next year. Just my .02

I don't know how much time to give it and I know nothing about acidity. However, if it's there I'd fish it, it's the only way to know for sure. My gut feeling is that it's possible for fish to start using that tree as cover almost immediately.
