Drop shot questions

Featured Replies

As some of you may know from my others posts I am going out tomorrow to try spinnerbaits, cranks (again) and mostly drop shot rig.  So here is my question:

Given that drop shot has to be a certain length, to fit both hook and weight, how can you use it to fish shallows?  Is it only a deep water rig?  In shallow won't the weight just drag along the rocks and weeds and do nothing?  Is this too shallow?  Am I over-analyzing lol?

Can you use spinnerbaits in shallows?  I find the concept of shallows fishing highly odd and am struggling to internalize the process.

Any help is appreciated.

I fished DS today in approx. 3 fow. Had the hook a whopping 4 1/2 to 5 inches above the sinker, just to keep the bait off the bottom. Landed a 4lb 6 oz bass on it too. Not bad for an Iowa bass.

i use both spinnerbaits and dropshot rigs in shallow water.  I'm not being mean but i think you may be over analyzing a tad too much.

Basically with a dropshot rig you want to cast it out and shake it, stopping occassionally to let it fall or quiver.  I catch fish in less than 6 ft with it pretty often.  Spinnerbaits are just awesome around weeds in less than 6 ft as well.

A lure is a tool of the trade just like your fishing rod or reel.  Except with fishing lures there's no real wrong way to use them unless you tell yourself there is.  I know people that use dd 22's in ten feet of water just to kick up mud, and it works.

I just don't want to see you limit yourself, if you can imagine it go ahead and try it.  its one of the beautiful things about fishing!

Thanks a ton - I agree I do over analyze and think myself into a mess sometimes lol.  I will report back my findings tomorrow - I am heading out to a well populated lake to try shallow weedless shore, weeded shore and deep water drop  shotting and spinnerbait.

On the drop I will start with approx 12 inch leader and go less or more from there.  I am also using 6" and 7" worms, which are bigger than normal drop shot rigs - we will see.

I hope it produces a catch - would be my first :)

Nothing can beat the experiences you will have out on the water. So go out and try it. There is nothing set in stone when it comes to how to fish a particular lure or rig. Try it and see.

As for the Drop Shot. You will find that many of the top pros in fishing have gone from using a C-rig to a Drop Shot. They cast is long distances and work it in the shallowest of water. It has become a key rig of many of them. So don't be afraid to try it from the bank.

I like your spirit!  But hey if the hook of the rig is getting caught on stuff try using a longer leader, i generally use about 10 to 12 inches on mine as well
