Bass Fishing in Brackish Water

Featured Replies

Are there any special considerations I should be aware of before fishing in brackish water? I'm going down to the Alabama gulf coast and I will be fishing in a brackish river. The river is known to have both Large Mouth Bass and Red Fish. We are going to be targeting the bass, but certainly wouldn't mind catching some reds as well. I've heard you will often catch reds when bass fishing and catch bass when red fishing there. Is there anything else you can tell me about fishing in brackish water that is different from pure fresh water? For example, other types of bait that work well, or anything that definitely doesn't work... Thanks guys!

Where will you be fishing? I live on the East side of Mobile bay (near Fairhope). Junebug trickworms and lizards do well in the rivers and the delta.  Don't be surprised if you only catch dinks, especially in the Delta.

Places I suggest--

Bon Secour river

Boggy Branch

Fish river

Weeks bay

Spinnerbaits

TTF Trout Killers [ on a 1/8-3/8 oz. jig head.] (Texas Avacodao, plumtruease, salt/pepper, pumkinseed/chart., firetiger, rootbeer black/chart, nuclear chicken.)        http://www.texastacklefactory.com/display.asp?subDepartmentID=1778

TTF Reds Killers ( same as trout killers.)       http://www.texastacklefactory.com/display.asp?subDepartmentID=1781

Norton Sand Eels (Mardi Gras, salty chicken, jalepeno, margarita.)    http://www.fishingtackleunlimited.com/p/FTU/c-inshore-lures/NOR-8SE.html

Rapla Skitter Walks (Hot Chart., Bone, Clown[red/gold] Black, Chart.)

Gold spoons

Tube baits (around grass.)

Live shrimp (freelined or under a popping cork.)     http://www.fishingtackleunlimited.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SRCH&Search=cajun%20thunder

Good luck!

Any more questions feel free to ask!

p.s.     If you think bass put up a good fight, wait till you hook into a red!! tell us what you think!

I'm in Bay Minette.  My brother live in Foley.  We're going to be on Fish River.  I live in Tennessee and I've been fishing in lakes for smallies and large mouths.  I'm hoping to get ahold of some reds.  But I don't care.  I'm just looking forward to a good trip.  Thanks.

From what I can tell the trout killers look a lot like flukes and the reds killers look a lot like swim senkos with the tail dyed.  Is that accurate?  I have flukes and swim senkos, but I don't have those other baits.

The trout killers are pretty much flukes, just a bit bigger and a little bit differnt action plus I can't find some of the colors in flukes. I use flukes in the salt too. I think the swim senkos are heavier and a bit differnt then the red killers. I think red killers are a must, but flukes or trout killers don't make that much of a difference.

Good Luck!
