Rain Rain go away?????

Featured Replies

I always preferred fishing on dark , overcast and even rainy days. Up here in the Northeast for the last few weeks you can count on one hand the days it hasn't rained and the fishing has been unusually slow. Anyone know why this might be?

If the amount of rain is changing the water depth substantially or constantly changing the surface temps, or keeping the water dirty etc. it makes sense that the fish will be harder to locate or pattern.

If you have opportunity to fish the deeper water you will probably find the fish are more predictable and eager to bite because deeper fish are less affected by weather changes.

Especially now that it is getting so hot! I have been doing well in deeper water with good structure/cover the past two months!

A few other thoughts.

If the rain has been accompanied by thunder and lightning this will often push largemouth's into the bases of the heavier weeds in shallower water and expansive shallow flats.  On the other hand, it been my experience that smallmouth "river fish" are much less affected by rain, lightning, thunder or cold fronts.

If the rain has recently muddied up the water then look for clearer water or where the clear and muddy water creates a distinct visible line.  Oftentimes the fish will hang just inside the off-color or dirty water, and then bolt out into the clear water to feed.

If the rain has been warm, and the moon full, or close to full, you could have extensive insect hatches going on in the evening.  About a week ago, in my neck of the woods, mayflies went crazy hatching in giant "clouds".  A couple of bass that I caught the next day threw up dozens of mayflies when they were boatside!  Still, the day was a bit slower than normal.

Lastly, slow down - a lot.  Go to baits that you can work more slowly through the water at various depths.
