Florida-strain Largemouth

Featured Replies

My wifes uncle has a small farm pond(2 ac) on his property.  A couple of years ago he had it stocked with a Florida-strain LM.  When they stocked it they told him that these bass would not spawn.  Does anyone know why or if this is true.  Is it maybe because of the size of the lake?

                            Thanx

I have never heard of such a thing before. I fish on lots of small ponds just about that size, and these fish spawn every year and there is always a good crop of young bass. I live in Kansas so maybe the bass hear are northern strain instead of the florida ones but other than that i cant think of a thing.

kajun  im saying  this  with  any authority but  =  they might  not be true  florida strain  kinda like  a hybreed sun fish.   With  genetics  the way they are today they  might  be a  mix  that  simple  cant  reproduse.  With  most  florida  strain fish  they  are  after  the  hawgs without  regaurds  to reproduction. Not that its  worth it  but  there  is my .02$ worth!~

Thats kind of what I was thinkig JD except for the fact that the people that told him this were the people that were selling him the Florida LM strain.  There's an article in this site about that same subject, about how you just can't tell by looking you have to have a genetic test done to really find out.  If maybe we just noticed them not spawning that would be the case but the salesmen told him this.  I know what ya'll are thinking and I wouldn't have stocked a fish that wouldn't spawn either.  He has catfish in this lake also.

If its a full booded Florida bass or half blooded or gorilla bass they all spawn. I think the guy was full of it or misinformed. I mean unless they came out with a new brand of bass that i am not aware of but i doubt it. When a florida bass gets bigger you can tell by its bug eyes. What i would do is send a scale or three to the DNR and have them test it to figure out what kind of bass it is.

Florida bass will even cross breed with other native forms of largemouth bass.

i have a grandmother who has a pond and they stocked her pond with catfish and said they wouldn't re spawn I'm not sure why probably so you would have to restock

Many times if they want to control the population they will stock only males or only females. This might have been what he was referring too.

This is what I was thinking.  But if there are males and females, I can't think of why they wouldn't spawn.

It should be upon request I would think if it is a private pond? Maybe it is because they are hybrids.

Well, it only took this thread 4 and a half years to resurrect, which proves that anything is possible.

Some strains of Florida bass have been made sterile, so they don't cross.

Google sterile florida bass, tons of info on such.

Probably just trying to get you to buy more stock fish next season.

There are pros and cons to sterile bass.

A lot of pond owners feel its easier to maintain the population of a pond if bass don't reproduce.

You never have to worry about over populating or crossing.
