help with high tide???

Featured Replies

Hello all. I am having a difficult time finding fish during high tide times (Potomac River). I do very well at low tide fishing grass and wood. When high tide arrives I struggle to locate fish. Any tips or tactics??? Thanks.

I am now familiar with river fishing, but do fish leave the grass and wood because the tide is high? Maybe the current is to swift and you need to find a more stagnant spot to fish in. I really am just guessing here, I honestly have no idea.

Aaron, when I went out with that guide in Mattawoman we fished any sort of shade we could find before the tide started going out. When I say any, I mean ANY type of shade, not just trees but shade from clusters of elevated lily pads, raised banks, etc. Then once the tide started to go out a little we fished ambush points like where little creeks or channels met with wider water or other channels. I wish I could show you but imagine outgoing tide as sucking all the water back out of an area, creating a current that brings bait from the back of the creeks out towards bigger water. Just find "current" breaks like abrupt endings in lily pad clusters or turns in the creeks.

Of course, none of this will be useful in that open field of grass that we fished the first time out unless you can find some defined channels that run through that stuff.
