Hook Set

Featured Replies

What type of hook set should I use when fishing a fluke?  I am using a sweep action hook set. I rigged it using a swivel, split shot weight above swivel and a 6 to 12 inch flouro leader.  I am using the zoom magnum super fluke.  I lost 5 fish.  Sad but true.  I put the hook throught the bait so the hook comes out on top and I put the point of the hook back into the lure.  Not deep, just barely covering the hook point.  Its a sad thing to see 5 pounders come loose.

I've got a few questions for you.

What action rod are you using?

What line?

What kind and size of hook?

Did you see the fish bite the fluke?

Sweep rod right or left for treble hooks.

Hard, over the head hookset for single hooks.  :)

for any bait I'm using i always set the hook hard straight up over my head and i hardly ever lose fish that way

Frankly no matter what bait I'm using, single hook or treble, I find that I'm doing a sweeping hookset from left to right. It goes from 8:00-2:00 on a clock. I very rarely lose a fish once i have it buttoned.

For vertical fishing, like when I drop shot short casts from the boat, or even when I'm flipping and pitching short I do a 6:00-12:00 hook set.

Use the correct sized Gammy hooks for your baits, they're super sharp. At very least, always sharpen your hooks every handful of fish you catch. Especially cranks that you've been pulling through timber and such.

Make sure you're setting the hook at the right time as well. If your timing is early, you're screwed. Some baits you have to wait a 1/2 a second longer to set the hook, buzzbaits and frogs for example.  Perhaps you're a little anxious to catch fish on this lure. Experiment with letting the bass take the bait longer before setting the hook.

Don't get cute either. Have a hard, committed, "I'm not screwing around" type of hookset. Let your hands get "soft" when the bass is on. Don't squeeze the rod like you want to choke it to death. Have soft hands!

I learned when first starting to use flukes that you have to use the right size hook... if the hook is too small, there's no room for the bait to slide back on the hook, and it doesn't expose enough hook to get a solid hook set.  Make sure that the bait can move back when you set it.  If it doesn't, try a bigger hook.  For your standard 5" fluke, I think 3/0 or 4/0 is as small as you would want to go.

I don 't think your rigging is wrong, I think your timing is wrong. With baits like sluggos, flukes n 'such the difference between a good hooksete and missing a fish is you trying to set the hook too fast, wait until you feel the fish pulling the bait or your line moving as the fish takes away the bait.
