These fish will not bite

Featured Replies

When fish are guarding fry, why wont they bite. How can you get this fish to bite. Thanks Travis

Your best bet is to annoy them into attempting to kill what ever you are throwing.  They are pretty zoned in on doing nothing but protecting the nest.  Either annoy them, or find that spot on the nest that makes them attack.

They will bite. Just keep at it. Like what was said previously just keep ticking the bass off. Let your lure just sit there among the fry, he will swipe. Or try a popper, cast past the fry and slowly work it in, make sure that when you are close to the school of fry, slow down even more. You can even dead stick the popper right above the bass. Try it out and let us know how it worked out for you.

Sure they will. There's an article in the current issue of BassMaster about it.

The smaller male bass will guard it's own fry brood for a few days then leaves them. The larger females feed on fry as soon as they have recouped from spawning.

Try both hard and soft jerk baits along the weed lines, don't bother with trying to get post spawn sight fish to strike. Also fish the deep break lines below the depth of light.

Get a crankbait that matches a pickerel.  I seen the small pickerel eating away at the brood of small bass fry.  I put on a small rapala that matched the fry as close as i could and nailed every pickerel that i could.  We do want the bass fry to live at least till 10 or 12lbs.

#1 bait for this situation is a wacky rig senko. This is the situation when I mainly use a senko and it works like a charm. I generally drop down to the smaller size bait for this.
