Fish Hunting

After reading so many posts on this site I have determined that new anglers do not understand that we go hunting when we go fishing.

Fish Hunting is what I call it.

Unlike other forms of hunting where we walk around fields and in the forests where we can see and hear everything, we hunt in another world. A world totally opposite and foreign to what humans are designed to live and to hunt within.

We have tools that make our hunting more efficient, but the overall method is to gather the information we can on any body of water plus the weather conditions and then apply it to the fishing environment under water.

So many posts discuss the air temperature and not the water temperature that one has to wonder if the writers fully understand that they are entering a world of its own which is alien to humans.

Catt's post on fishing grass is a wonderful example along with Glenn's post regarding the Top 10 Mistakes Amature Anglers Make.  Catt discuss what is under the water while the answers to Glenn's post is about baits and techniques.

It is important for all of us to understand water; how it moves; what causes it to move; what is under the surface and at what depth; and how various species of fish relate to the structure at different times of the year; and how water temperature affects bass.

So when we go fishing we are actually hunting which means patience and skill need to be coupled together to locate and catch our prey.

Although fish have a very small brain they seem to be much smarter than humans within their water environment. This creates our challenge which some of us understand while others just keep on doing the same thing over and over and over again.

It takes many hours of "hunting" before you can shoot your quarry...it takes many hours of "fishing" before you can catch your quarry.

In both hunting/fishing we must find

Where our quarry lives (location)

What that quarry feeds on (prey)

Where that food (prey) is located

How both the quarry and prey are effected by both seasonal and daily environmental conditions.

With the above in mind we can now establish techniques of intercepting our quarry.

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got ;)
