To cold for top water ?

Featured Replies

I'm still new to top water fishing with poppers and buzz baits. I've read that the best time in when the water is warm. Right now the water temp is at 60*, is that to cool for poppers and such ? What's the ideal water temp for top water ? Best time of day ? -Thanks

for me the best luck ive had has been in the early morning or late late afternoon.  also dead heat of summer is when i get the most bites on top water.  ive had a few bites already this year on top water.  still getting more bites on lizards and jigs.  but have had a few bites on topwater.  water temps here are mid to high 70's the last time i was out

Never too cold unless you don't get bit. Start tossing them!

65+ is really were it turns on for me in Florida. Low light conditions are traditionally considered the best. Night, mornings, and overcast. Keep using it should pick up for you soon. My first topwater bite this year was at 63 degree water. However, fish can be caught year round with them, under any condition giving the right presentation. But, may not be the best producing bait at that particular time.

I had a great hour or two many years ago on an Indiana gravel pit catching LM on a surface bait in a snow storm. Regardless of water temp I usually have a surface bait tied on or ready to tie on.

I'd say in my limited experience that I agree with most of whats been said. I do best with topwater at sunrise and even moreso at dusk. But, I'll throw them at anytime just to see if I can stir up a bite, not always because I think it's the best bet, A lot of times just because I think it's the most fun ;)

I caught 3 last week on a spitin image.

It was mid day and sunny. I had 3 others on and lost them and a few blow ups that resulted in misses

ive been doing well on spro frogs also so far this season, (for me anyway) though i have nolt been on the water in almost 2 weeks. i always try to pull em up top when i get out there. i'm so addicted to froggin that i usually stick with it for to long.

don't ever limit yourself based on what "should" or "shouldn't" work.  Sometimes all it takes is doing something different than everyone else to put fish in the boat.  Experiment, see what works, and keep doing it.  If something doesn't work, try something else.
