Fishing Ledges

Featured Replies

I would like to hear some thoughts on fishing ledges.  I just got wore out in a tournament by guys sitting on a couple of ledges all day and bringing in enormous sacks.  It's something I've never tried and would really like to figure out.

Define "ledge" from your prospective  ;)

I'm guessing it's the break from shallower water to deeper water that form channels?  They are sitting out in the middle of no where catching fish from what I can see!  lol

A ledge is just what it is, a drop off, breakline, whatever you want to call it. It's a structure that bass will relate to especially in the summer months.

There is some good info under the "Fishing Deep Thread" in this forum from just a couple days ago.

Did you try to fish the spots those other guys were catching them on? If so, how did you pick a particular spot to fish?

Any off-shore structure can be searched, using your sonar. Find bait congregating on a particular section, especially around any irregularities, i.e.: downed trees, rock out-cropings or cuts in the ledges. You don't need to find "fish" per say. Then fish that section with various presentations, depending on what depth you find the bait in.

The drop shot usually rules on deep, off-shore structures, along with spoons and deep diving cranks. But before you worry about what you are going to catch them on, you got to find them first! :)

The above mentioned link to a previous posting thread on deep water fishing is truly excellent. Study that thread closely.
