Blueback Herring?

Featured Replies

Much different than shad. In general they will move the bite deeper and give the lake more of a run and gun type bite since they roam open water more. They also give the lakes a good topwater bite often over deep water. My experience is that bright sunny days are better on herring lakes than cloudy overcast days. They spawn shallow in May and stay suspended over deep water most of the rest of the year.

Oh ok. I have a tournament on Clarks Hill in August and ive never fished the lake. I know that the bass will often school with the sripers but i didnt know how deep they will go in search of bluebacks because i have heard that they will go pretty deep.

Fluke, What do you know about The Hill? LOL. Don't be sending people to my summer holes. All kidding aside and as Randall has said, herring take the bite deeper and many times they will be there one day and not the next. I will be fishing humps from 15-30 feet deep and looking for bait. You will know pretty quick if they are there. Usually make about 10-15 cast per spot and if you get a bite fish it hard if not try another spot. I will throw topwaters on all those deep areas if I see bait fish and some schooling action. A fluke is also a must if grass is present. PM me. I fish the Hill 2-3 times a week and will help you out with a pattern....no spots though.
