Fishing a point

Featured Replies

I have acquired a Map of the lake I fish. The lake was built back in the 60's and theres no doubt that this map is from around that time. I know that over the past 40+ years that the shoreline may have changed a little bit ,but the lake remains as it was back then(for the most part)

On the map I have found a very obvious point. I was wondering how to approach fishing this .

My thoughts are that you start off at the bank and slowly go out towards deeper water in the direction of the point. On the graph youll see the slope of the point as you get into deeper and deeper water. Eventually the point has to end and make an absolute transition into the bottom of the lake.

Should I drop a marker buoy where I see the point end and the bottom of the lake start, and then fish the area between the marker buoy and the bank?

Is that how I could get a definite idea of where the point actually is?

#1 Yes, except I would start deep & work shallower

#2 Depth finder & buoys

After you have covered it, be sure to try fishing it up hill. Give the fish something different to see. Set up on the top of the point and throw out to the deeper water.

Using a fish finder that also has a depth finder will tell you what direction the point is going in exactly and where it ends. The hummingbird portable fish finder was the best thing that ever happend to shore fisherman. Now we can find out how deep the body of water is, where the flats and dropoff's are and how to fish it. I'm mainly a shore fisherman but having the tools that the boaters have put us on more even ground. Lets face it shore fishing is only backwards from boat fishing.

I've had good success hopping a 3/8" football jig with a pork trailer up the rocky point very slowly. Or banging a crankbait up it too. I can fan cast from the top of the point.

Now you have two options of fishing it with the boat near the shoreline or anchored deeper off the point and fish up it. You also have the option on fishing across it too. I try this from shore all the time by fishing across it.

Markers are great tools for helping to understand layouts of points, humps and channels. I've thrown as many as a dozen or more markers out on a piece of structure before, just to "bring it to the surface" to where I could get a good look at it.

Even with all the new electronics I still depend on my markers. One of the best tools in the boat.

Take a DT20 crankbait and throw it on the edge of the point and work it down the side. That will cause some great actions that fish cannot resist.
