fishing in the months of September and October on Rivers

Featured Replies

Do you have any advice on fishing in the months of September and October on Rivers such as the potomac that have a lot of grass. I was in a tournament there on the Potomac on saturday, and got a few bites on a soft plastic jerkbait, and lost a bass when he ran into the grass with the soft plastic jerkbait in his mouth. My partner caught a 14 incher by punching isolated grass on the maiun river. There were many perch jumping in the grass beds and there were small bass fry everywhere..............

i went last week i caught 5 lbs and 3 3 lbs and mostly 2 1/2 lbs on pop r on grass edges

How do you imitate a injured yellow perch dying in a hole in the grass to make a bass come out and eat it?

You've got a lot of choices there buddy. Depending on how thick the grass is, you can use a frog or a jig...well a number of lures. try to match the size and colors of the prey if you think those bass are keyed into the perch.

I've always found that deadsticking an original floating Rapala works.  Lots of sizes to match the hatch too.  Their perch/orange belly (color #5) has been my choice.

Only problem is the slowness of fishing it.  In a tournament, I always wanted to be on the move, and that doesn't fit with deadsticking all that well.  Also, you need to keep one eye on the sky to make sure a seagull (aka - dump chicken) doesn't zone in on it.

i got shut out for the first time this year on a river yesterday.  not even a bite.
