Fishing in heavy rain and flooding.

Featured Replies

I am planning on fishing tomorrow afternoon and evening and unfortunately (or fortunately?) we in upstate NY are preparing for heavy rain with possible flood conditions.

I am sure there are ways to fish these conditions with success, I just don't know what they are (Thank God for BassResource).  I love fishing in wet conditions.  A light drizzle does wonders for my success, but do any of you look forward to fishing in the very heavy stuff?  I'll be mostly fishing small water so I don't have to worry too much about the wind.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Marc

On days with heavy rain, I usually target creeks and coves by the major highways (I dont know if this suits your conditions) as these usually have drainage that leads to the lake at some point. From there I'll target the rushing water from the drainage and fish the heck out of it. I usually do my best on plastic craws (paca and chigger craws) and jigs, but almost everything has caught me fish at one point or another.

Thank you for your response.

It suits my area to some extent.  There are not many major highways to speak of near the water that I will be fishing tomorrow, but I will hold onto the idea for future reference.

I will most certainly target areas where creeks are rapidly pushing new forage into the lake.

Thanks Again,

Marc

Every time I get heavy rain here, I ALWAYS fish something top water. Doesn't even matter if it wasn't meant for topwater (like texas-rigged senkos, worms, etc), I ALWAYS get a strike. In short: use something topwater :).

Do you ever fish the canals down there?  I've heard the fishing there is phenomenal.

I have been thinking about buying a place in Lehigh Acres mainly because of the home prices and the surplus of homes for sale.  How do you like the area?  Has the BP Oil Crisis affected the area much?

Buzzbaits n topwater frogs have produced well for me.

I fish the canals here every day, heck the canal is just 2 streets over from me.  Sometimes the bite is on, others it isn't.  The main problem is that the canals are really covered in moss, a lot of surface moss as well.  The area is very nice and quiet, you've just go to be careful which side of Lehigh you pick, because like all areas, there are bad parts as well.  Yes, the houses are very nice here, you're talking $200-300k+ houses selling for $90-100,000.  The Oil has had 0 effect on where I live.
