Sammy vs. Spook

Featured Replies

I have caught loads of bass, large and small on each of these classic baits, so this is not about what catches fish.

I did notice the other day that the sammy is harder to keep on the top especially when fishing aggressively.

The sammy would nose under the surface.  but the super spook jr, and my regular zara spooks can be fished hard yet will always stay completely on the surface.

Seems like it should matter under certain conditions.

I think the Sammy has a more erratic action than the Spook, but you do have to fish it slower to keep it walking. My favorite is the Gunfish, you can fish it fast and it spits up a lot of water.

I have caught a ton of bass on the various Zara's but I got a Sammy this winter and I cannot wait to start throwing this bait.

As soon as the top water bite really turns on I will give it a go.  It does walk quite nicely but I have only thrown it a couple times to test its action so I haven't tried it at higher speeds.

I don't have that issue with a Sammy when fishing fast.  Are you sure it isn't the line pulling it under?  Anyway, at rest, the Sammy sits tail down, just like a floater shad.

I like the sammy....but surprisingly ive had more strikes using zara spooks, and heddons spooks.

The sammy's action sure looks like it would catch more fish though, i think its becuase the other spooks make more noise, more rattles.

I've had equal success with both series.  I usually use the spooks because they are cheaper but I like the fact that the Sammys come in more realistic colors.

Haven't used a sammy, But have had much success and love the action of the spook. Due to the price and success rate i will stick with spooks until they stop working, then maybe just maybe ill consider spending the extra money for a sammy.

I say both are great baits to have in your topwater arsenal, there are times when is better than the other.

I feel the same way

Avid, I didn't read any of the replies so I don't know if this has already been said, but try rubbing some wax on the first 3ft of line above the line tie of the Sammy.

The best to use is called "sex wax"  It's the wax surfers use on their surf and skim boards.  You can find it online or in any of the beach gift stores.

The wax will keep the line floating and you should be able to race the Sammy back in without any problems at all.
