I have seen similar topics to this none that hit is exactly. How is smallmouth fishing near Charlotte, NC? Anyone here fish that area for small mouth?

I believe the closest Smallmouths to you are in the Uwharrie River.

I've fished it a couple times and have had decent results. The prime NC Smallmouth waters are up in the mountains. Lake James and the New River are two great ones.

According to that, all of your smallmouth come from the Mountain Region. Still, some of those rivers may come close to you. I've caught smallmouth where I live on the Yadkin River between Forsyth and Yadkin counties.

I've just heard of the The Uwharrie river having them. I've never tried it though

It's more than worth the drive up to the New River... good fishing and fine float trips, if you don't know where to go just send me a message and we will show you where to catch some nice smallies... and it's all free.  

Weather permitting, I'm trying to go to New River State Park sometime nextg week. I'm completely new to smallmouth, but I'll be sure to let you know how things go.

If you want to stay within N. Carolina, I think Hiwassee and Fontana are both supposed to be quite good for smallmouth. If you don't care what state, driving into east Tennessee probably expands your options further.

There aren't any in Norman. Only Largemouth and Spotted Bass.

I had a chance to go to New River State Park a week ago. It was my first time there, and I have to tell you now that fishing there would be best done by canoe or with waders. The state owns very little land there, and pretty much everything else is private property from the bank. I took my baitcaster, but would definately have been better off with light action gear. More focus is placed on trout in Ashe & Alleghaney Counties than on smallmouth. The best stretches were comparatively deep river sections with slower current, as the temps plummet when the sun goes down. They're still just starting to warm up there.
